White Sage is a highly revered herb known for its cleansing and purifying qualities. It is traditionally used in smudging rituals to clear negative energy and invite positive vibrations into spaces. White Sage also promotes emotional healing, tranquility, and mental clarity. It helps to calm the mind and soothe anxiety, making it an excellent tool for meditation and mindfulness practices.

• Prepare your space:

  • Ensure you’re in a well-ventilated area with an open window or door to allow the negative energy to escape.

  • Place a fireproof dish, such as an abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or small plate, to catch the ashes. You can also use a sand-filled dish to safely extinguish the sage when you're done.

• Light the sage:

  • Hold the sage bundle at a slight angle and use a match or a lighter to ignite the end. You may need to hold it to the flame for a few moments to get the smoke going.

• Let it smolder:

  • Blow gently on the sage to encourage it to smolder and produce a steady stream of smoke. The goal is not to create a full blaze but to allow the sage to produce a steady, controlled smoke.

• Start the smudging ritual:

  • Begin by walking through the space, holding the sage bundle and allowing the smoke to waft around the room or area you want to cleanse. You can wave it gently or move the sage slowly to direct the smoke into the corners, near doorways, and around furniture.

  • As you move, you can speak your intention, prayers, or affirmations. Many people set intentions like “I release all negativity” or “May peace and clarity fill this space.”

• Smudge yourself or others:

  • To cleanse yourself or others, hold the sage bundle and allow the smoke to gently move around your body, starting from the feet and moving upward toward the head. This is often done in a circular motion or by waving the smoke around.

  • Focus on areas where you feel blocked or need healing. You may also hold the sage near your heart or throat chakra for deeper cleansing.

• Let the sage finish burning:

  • If your sage bundle burns out on its own, you’re finished. However, if you want to extinguish it early, simply press the lit end of the sage into a fireproof dish or sand to put out the flame. Don’t crush the sage; simply ensure it’s safely extinguished.

• Dispose of ashes:

  • Once the sage is extinguished, you can dispose of the ashes in a safe and respectful manner, such as burying them or offering them to nature.

Never blow on the stick while cleansing, as this could cause sparks to fly and cause a fire. Do not wear billowy, loose fitting clothing and keep windows closed while cleansing. If gently waving your stick room to room, always hold a fireproof container underneath.
